Abstract

In this project it is intended to develop and characterize nanocristaline electrocatalysts formed by bimetallic alloys of Pt-M and materials constituted only by M, where M = Ru and Mo, dispersed onto a carbon powder with several Pt:M proportion. These electrocatalysts will be characterized with respect to the real composition using X-Ray Dispersive Energy and to the morphology using X-Ray Diffraction. The materials will be evaluated as catalysts for the hydrogen oxidation reaction in the presence of CO in PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) single cells, using techniques such as: steady state polarization measurements, cyclic voltammetry, CO stripping linear sweep voltammetry, and in situ FTIR experiments. A modeling of the kinetic processes occurring in the catalyst CO poisoning mechanism will be conducted aiming at identifying the fundamental steps for the CO elimination, which may allow the project of more CO tolerant electrocatalysts.
