Abstract

The purpose of this research is the study of changes occurred in the central neighborhoods of Sao Paulo City, between 1940 and 1960, analising the physical structures and agents that had acted on them. Although It starts with the study of changes, the objective is also analyze what doesn’t change, or, in other words, which characteristics of those neighborhoods stay along the period. As territorial cutting of the research, the neighborhoods of Bom Retiro and Bela Vista were defined like a focus of it, because the different process that they present. Using the comparative analysis of the compositional elements of the urban space (the urbanization, the development and the construction), in several moments, the study intends to identify which are the most representative changes and in wich area of the neigborhoods they had ocurred, chosing the areas in each one to be better analyzed.
