Abstract

The new Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) dental diamond tips were developed by the National Institute of Space Researches (INPE). They are composed by molybdenum haste with only one layer of synthetic diamond formed due to a process of chemical vapor deposition. The CVD diamond presents several properties comparable to the natural diamond. It is a continuous diamond, homogeneous, strongly adhered to the metal and highly wear resistant that allows the association of those tips to the ultrasonic equipment. However, there are few scientific evidences that help the dentists in their decision for adopting this instrument for dental cutting. Once this promising technology presents few researches exploration, the objective of this project is to evaluate the effectiveness of the CVD diamond tips searching for scientific evidences that support its use associated to the ultrasonic equipment in the dental clinic. Four sequential studies will approach the implications of this new technique of cavity preparation, in the effectiveness of enamel and dentin cutting, in the microleakage percentage in class V cavities restored with composite resin, in the bond strength to microtensile, in the pulpal response of permanent teeth and in the patients' perception during the clinical procedure performed with CVD diamond tip. The control group for all of the studies will be the conventional diamond tip associated to the traditional high speed turbine.
