Abstract

The internal fixation systems are used in the reduction of fractures and osteotomies programmed for various surgical areas broadly. These systems are widely used in surgery maxillo-facial, mainly for treatment of facial fractures and fixation in orthognathic surgery. This study aims to analyze, through metallography, oxygen and nitrogen analysis and vickers hardness test, four brands of internal fixation materials used in Maxillo-Facial Surgery. Data will be analyzed in the statistical analysis program SAS (SAS Institute Inc., Cary NC, USA). Then, it will be applied to analysis of variance (ANOVA) One-way and then the Tukey test with significance of 5% (a = 0.05) for comparing the means to compare the degree of purity and standardization among groups analyzed. The materials most commonly used internal fixation are currently based on titanium, commercially pure or by titanium alloy. The composition, structure and the exact thickness of the oxide layer over the surface material is fixed which can be changed and contamination during the various stages of milling and sterilization, the incorporation of metal contaminants on the surface. However, despite the use of titanium materials of internal fixation, the literature lacks information about the chemical constitution and metallographic analysis of the plates and screws nowadays widely used, requiring more specific studies evaluating the standardization and composition of these materials.
