Abstract

Introduction: Chemotherapy has harmful side effects to the digestive tract. It is believed that there are connections between chemotherapy, oxidative stress and intestinal mucosa damage. One of the useful tests in intestinal permeability evaluation is the low absorption sugars determination, such as lactulose and mannitol. Purpose: evaluate the intestinal permeability and nutritional status on antioxidant vitamins and folic acid in subjects treated with chemotherapy. Methodology: Nutritional assessment: analysis of dietary, anthropometric and biochemical data, in addition to the plasma levels of vitamins E, C and beta-carotene, plasma and erythrocyte folic acid. Intestinal permeability test: Collection of whole urine before and 5 hours after intake of 150 ml mannitol (2g) and lactulose (7.5g) solution. Assessment of mucositis: mucositis classification by toxicity degrees resulting from the treatment. Results: obtained by the average and standard deviation, lactulose and mannitol excretion percentage and the lactulose / mannitol rate. The analysis of differences between ad within groups (chemotherapy treatment and control) will be performed by non-parametric test.
