Abstract

The success of larynx cancer surgical treatment cannot be only due to the survival rate. It is also related to the quick rehabilitation of voice and speech. To understand how the digestive tract structures participate in the tracheoesophageal sound, manometry and videofluoroscopy can be used as analysis methods. The purpose of this study is to analyze the intraluminal pressure of the pharyngoesophageal transition and correlate it with quantitative values of the functional behavior of this anatomic region at rest and during phonation in laryngectomized patients who use phonatory tracheoesophageal prostheses. The study will analyze 40 individuals without age or gender distinction who were submitted to total laryngectomy and directed to secondary puncture with the purpose of placement of a speech prosthesis. At first, voice and speech of the patients will be collected and recorded with a video camera mounted on a tripod. Afterwards a manometry exam will evaluate the intraluminal pressure of the pharyngoesophageal transition at rest and during phonation. Finally, the videofluoroscopy exam will visualize and quantitatively analyze the functional behavior of the pharyngoesophageal transition at rest and during the vocalization of the vowel /a/. The obtained data will receive specific statistical treatment. (AU)
