Abstract This research aims at analyzing the realization of arbitrary subjects in written Brazilian Portuguese at the turn of the 20th Century - a moment of changes in the history of the country and of its language. Taking part in the Project "História Social do Português Paulista (1890-1920)", which is a branch of The Thematic Project "História do Português Paulista" (FAPESP 06/55944-0), the study's corpus consists of texts that were published in magazines from the city of São Paulo from 1890 to 1920. Both finite and infinitival sentences will be analyzed: from the former, we intend to observe the occurrence of nominative pronominal forms of indefinite reference and the usage of pronominal passive constructions, focusing on the agreement between the verb and the internal argument; from the latter, we intend to discuss the insertion of the clitic "se" before the verbs. The research aims at investigating the linguistic factors that determine this phenomenon and at identifying the influence of European Portuguese rules in such magazines. The analysis must correlate the results with socio-historical and cultural features of the period and the time in which the samples were produced. | |
