Abstract

Protozoan of the genera Cryptosporidium are coccidia that infect the human beings and other mammals, birds, reptiles and fishes. This protozoan is considered an important ethiologic agent of diarrhea in immunossupessed and in imunocompetents human beings, and in some species of domestic and wild animals. The infection in human beings can be caused by C. hominis, or C. parvum, with many cases described in the literature. In bovines, C. parvum can be responsible for clinical cases of diarrhea and high mortality. The present project has as objective the development of a real time polymerase chain reaction for detection of C. parvum DNA and, after standardization of the protocol, to test the effectiveness of the technique in fecal samples of calves.
