Abstract

The foundry industry produces plenty of different items present in various sectors ofthe economy. Such items range from simple household gadgets to sophisticated devicesused by basic industries and the auto parts sector. This industry is important for theBrazilian economy and studies aiming at the improvement of its eciency are fundamentalto ensure its competitiveness worldwide. As highlighted in the literature, an importantfactor that inuences the production in the sector is the production planning. In recentyears, the investments in this area have been increasing and more attention has beendrawn by academic studies. This dissertation deals with the production planning in smallfoundries, whose major decisions are the determination of the alloys to be merged anditems to be produced. A question that still has not been considered in the literatureis the obligation to complete the production of the orders to be delivered to the client. However, in many real cases, an order cannot be partially delivered, that is, the items, which are parts of the order, may be parts of the nal product. In other cases, the ordermay be partially delivered, but with additional transportation/expedition costs. In thiscontext, two mathematical models for small foundry industry are proposed here. Oneof them deals with the production-planning problem of complete orders. In the other,an integrated model is proposed. This model approaches the problem in which partialdelivery is available taking into account transportations/expedition costs. A Relax-and-Fix heuristic is also proposed for the integrated model.
