Abstract Endocrine disrupters (IE) represent a class of emerging contaminants in aquatic systems, which may jeopardize the life of aquatic biota and human beings. Alter the functioning of the endocrine system blocking receptor sites of cells, increasing production and / or secretion of natural hormones, as well as interfering with the reproductive system. Although some studies are being developed to quantify and verify the toxicity of IE in the environment, virtually no studies in the literature associated with the behavior and availability of these substances in surface water. In this context, the study of interactions between IE and aquatic humic substances (AHS) is relevant in that they represent the main fraction of natural organic matter and can exercise an important role in processing, dispersion, mobility and transport of IE in aquatic systems . Also relevant is the study of new procedures for treatment of surface water, because studies have shown that conventional methods of treatment have not been able to fully eliminate the presence of some IE. Thus, studies to verify the applicability of peat for the treatment of surface water containing the IE are feasible, depending on the efficiency demonstrated by these in the treatment of water contaminated by oil products. Furthermore, it should be noted that Brazil has in its territory around 1.6 billion cubic meters of peat, and few researchers now developed in the country, to possible applications of technological and environmental aspects of this material. | |
