Abstract

Hearing loss in children should be identified and diagnosed before six months of age, in order to facilitate the better use of neuronal plasticity. Thus, it is known that the chances of developing speech and language may be similar to hearing children. Currently, several programs of newborn hearing screening have been implemented in hospitals around the world, in search of early diagnosis. Objective: To study the auditory skills and language in a group of deaf children with early diagnosis and intervention. Method: will be identified deaf children in a referral center for hearing health of high complexity, and will be lifted aspects relating to the referral source for diagnosis (screening, spontaneous demand from parents, demand from health care professionals, others), and the fellows will be divided into two groups: in the group 1 will be who had a diagnosis before six months of age; and in the group 2 will be who had diagnosis after six months of age. The two groups will be identified and described as to the age at diagnosis, age at onset of intervention, selection of electronic devices, etiology, and hearing skills and communication.
