Abstract

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy in vivo of different antimicrobial solutions contained in toothbrush holders, in the disinfection of toothbrushes. A total of 16 healthy volunteers will be selected and will participate in a randomized clinical trial, triple-blind, controlled crossover study, where three different solutions, one per week, will be employed for the storage of toothbrushes, having sterile tap water as a negative control. The following solutions will be tested: 1) Periogard® - chlorhexidine gluconate 0.12% (positive control), 2) Periobio® chlorhexidine gluconate 0.12% (test) 3) Cepacol® Chlorhexidine 0.05 % and 4) sterile tap water (negative control). Each volunteer will receive a standard toothbrush and toothpaste with no antimicrobial agent other than sodium fluoride, and perform dental hygiene in the morning, lunch and late afternoon. Each brush will be kept in a case with one of the solutions-tests, for a week, when they will be assessed for the presence or absence of microorganisms. The results will be submitted to appropriate statistical analysis.
