Abstract

frequency of oligoclonal bands (BOC) detection in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients in São Paulo is significantly lower than other countries, mainly those in Europe and in North America. Is not known why this occurs. One of the most interesting hypotheses related to immunopathogenesis of MS is called the hygiene hypothesis, which postulates an inverse relationship between helmintic infections prevalence and MS frequency. This fact is well documented in esquistososmosis mansonic that, however, has a low prevalence in Sao Paulo. As taeniasis is one of the most common parasitic diseases in developing regions, including Sao Paulo, the aim of this study is to verify the relationship between the occurrence of anti-Taenia antibodies in peripheral blood and BOC detection in MS diagnosed patients in the city of Sao Paulo. This study was performed in the clinic of demyelinating diseases at University of Sao Paulo Medical School. For anti-Taenia detection, it was used unidimensional proteins electrophoresis technique, in a batch system polyacrylamide gel, the LV-Tcra antigen (vesicular fluid of Taenia crassiceps) and ES-Tcra (excretion/secretion fluid of Taenia crassiceps). This study showed that in 49 patients with BOC, anti-Taenia antibodies against antigen LV were detected in 46.94% and against ES antigen in 57.14%. Therefore, in this group of patients there is no relationship between the occurrence of anti-Taenia antibodies and the detection of BOC in patients with clinically definite MS.
