Abstract

The cartography developed in the colleges and Jesuitic missions was fundamental for the occupation and mapping of the South American territory. It was a political instrument for the affirmation of power and diffusion of the Society of Jesus in Europe and also for the creation an institutional identity as it supported its action since its arrival in the Mission until the Suppression, in the 18th century. It was in the crisis before the expulsion of the company from the Spanish domains, in 1767, and even after this, that the Inacian knowledge of cartography figured as an important argument in the discussions about the legitimacy of the Order in the New World.
