Abstract

Trees are essential for emotional and environmental well-being of the urban dwellers, moreover considered as a connection factor with the nature. Its dynamics are a counterpoint to the built-up areas, following the city inhabitants life in a historic complicity. Recognizing the importance of the urban forestry, citizens' participation and involvement with the care and conservation of urban trees is justified to understand with thoroughness what the citizens' perception about these themes is, in order to know the causes and ways to work for the different population groups. Thus, the objectives of this research are to identify and analyze the perception of São Carlos citizens about the urban trees and verify if there is a relationship between the quantitative aspects. To reach these objectives, initially a quantification of the urban forestry will be made through remote sensing using Quickbird satellite images. After this, the city will be divided in areas with more or less urban forestry where structured questionnaires will be applied to the São Carlos' inhabitants to survey the environmental perception about urban forestry in a stratified random sampling. These data will be statistically analyzed and introduced in a relational database. As results we expect to update the data about the quantitative aspects of the municipality urban forestry and produce data that can help future environmental education works with the population, as recommended by the São Carlos' Urban Forestry Master Plan.
