Abstract

Porous polymeric membranes have numerous applications in the biomedical field, for the treatment of water, microfiltration, catalysis, controlled release devices, drug gas separation, etc. Several studies have reported porous polymeric membranes from binary polymer/solvent solutions. Ternary solutions (polymer/polymer/solvent) have been little explored for this purpose despite its potential to produce multicomponent membranes with unique properties and scaled by its composition and method of preparation. Recent studies in our research group showed that ternary solutions of poly ( ethylene-co- vinyl alcohol ) - EVOH , poly ( methyl methacrylate) PMMA and dimethylformamide originate porous membranes when cooled to temperatures below 150 °C as a result of phase separation liquid-liquid (L-L ), followed by solid-liquid separation (S-L) induced by temperature change (TIPS - Thermally induced Phase separation). In this work we propose to study the phase behavior of EVOH/solvent Copolymers Acrylics/solvent binary solutions and ternary solutions EVOH/Acrylic copolymer/solvent through the survey of phase diagrams by determining the temperatures of phase separation (L-L) and (S-L). Based on the phase behavior of these solutions, bicomponent porous membranes of EVOH/Acrylic copolymers are prepared by TIPS. Finally, this project will seek to correlate the phase behavior of binary and ternary solutions with the morphology and properties of the membranes obtained.
