Abstract

The city of São Paulo suffers annually with damaging floods that cause great social, economic and environmental losses (DAEE, 2010). Among the possibilities to minimize this problem, there is the construction of routing reservoirs, which temporarily store the exceeding streamflow, avoiding the overflow of the river, which would cause flooding of nearby areas. This paper aims to study the efficiency of flood routing multi-reservoir systems, through the analysis of one or more of the sub-basins that flow into the Tietê River, in São Paulo Metropolitan Area. The questions raised include floods of different IDF values, influence of the sedimentation in the reservoir routing, and the adequacy of the reservoirs project to the reality of the places where they were built. The results may orient structural and non-structural measures that will contribute to increase the efficiency of the infra-structure available, as well as aspects that should be taken into account in future projects. The scope of work includes the acquisition and organization of data on routing reservoirs, obtained with CTH and SIURB, the use of ArcGis tool for data input and data georreferencing onto the maps of the area, and the use of ABC6 software to analyze scenarios with rains of different duration, intensity and spatial distribution.
