Abstract

Surgical training is essential for learning, developing and refining surgical skills in medicine and veterinary medicine. For that, many alternatives are available, as live anaesthetized animals and laboratory simulating models. Using live animals means facing ethical issues and animal injury, making necessary to develop the most perfect laboratory model as possible. This means that greater benefits are achieved with the closest to live surgery the model is. Training with ethically sourced canine cadavers in surgical techniques is being done at Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics of University of São Paulo as a substitute method to the use of live animals in practical classes. Although many surgical procedures can be practiced with this method, there is no bleeding, and then there is a lack of haemostasis practicing. In this work we intend to develop a canine chemically preserved cadaveric model that simulates bleeding during surgical procedures, connecting its vessels to recipients containing a red liquid that imitates blood, and creating a pulsating pressure in the arterial system with a pump, and a static pressure in the venous system. This model will further be evaluated through a questionnaire completed by the students and professors that will use the system.
