Abstract

The ultrashort femtosecond (fs) pulses have special properties like high intensity and broadband spectra that allows innovative applications in optics. New lasers and new applications of fs pulses are growing constantly, being, therefore a rich field of research. In this project we propose to study third harmonic generation (THG) using fs pulses and Z-scan technique. Due to the fs pulse intensity and spectral bandwidth, the third harmonic suffer spectral interference during its generation. These effects can be used to investigate the intrinsic optical properties of any transparent isotropic materials. Furthermore, the interfaces between two transparent media play important role in the THG when focused beams are employed. Recently, during the study of nonlinear processes using fs pulses and THG Maker fringes technique, we have observed interesting effects of spectral interference in the third harmonic spectrum. The understanding of these spectral interferences has allowed obtaining some of the linear and the nonlinear optical properties of samples. Motivated by these results, in this work we intend to merge the concept of the THG spectral interference with Z-scan technique. As we know, Z-scan technique is widely used to investigate absorptive and refractive nonlinearities in several samples due to its simplicity and precision. In this way, we believe that the investigation of the THG allied with the Z-scan technique will bring new information about nonlinear processes in the focused beam condition. (AU)
