Abstract

There are nowadays two main transit modes in São Paulo Metropolitan Region, represented by two public companies: Paulista Company of Metropolitan Trains (CPTM), that operates the suburban trains, and São Paulo's Metropolitan Company (Metrô), that operates the subway. Both integrates the state Expansion Plan, that mix the role of the two modes, equaling them under the name "subway-quality network", giving the impression of an astonishing expansion of the subway network in a few years. The same confusion can be seen in the last transit plans, showing a lack of understanding of the role of each mode. The study's purpose is to verify the role of both modes in metropolitan transit, point their specificities, the possibilities of distinction and convergence, and its possible and desirable articulation.
