Abstract

In this research, we intend to discuss how the aging definitions and assignments are triggered in the context of the Brazilian public policies and how they make use of documents from international organisms, like the UN, which prepares and proposes to member States management plans of the elderly. It is, therefore, a qualitative analysis of discourses as known as the last stage of life, nationally, in order to discuss the issue on the international scenery. With the intention to extrapolate the mapping of public policies related to the old people in Brazil, this study suggests - based on an ethnographic approach - examining how the Special Secretariat for Human Rights (SEPDH-PI), the National Council of Older Persons (CMI) , the State Council of Elders of St. Paul (CEI-SP) and the Municipal Councils of Elders from Santos and Sao Paulo (CMI) perceive and articulate conceptions of aging and, on this basis, transform the social and political status of the elderly through the administration of that stage of life, considering the dynamics and disputes between the various institutions involved in the definition of what being old today means, and also how the participants from the spaces to be ethnographed incorporate these ideas, including the elderly - counselors and visitors.
