Abstract

The search for renewable energy sources makes biofuels like ethanol interesting alternatives to the current energy matrix. However, processing of sugar cane to ethanol generates a wide range of waste with difficult disposal, but which could be better utilized in the sense of obtaining latent energy, processing such wastes into high value by-products. Among these wastes, bagasse from sugar cane can already be considered a source of second generation bioethanol through fermentation of cellulose hydrolyzate. The hemicellulose present in the pomace, consists of pentose that in turn they are not easily fermentable, but have potential for obtaining hydrogen as a third generation biofuel, and also for obtaining volatile organic acids such products by anaerobic processing. Considering that the fundamental knowledge of obtaining those products biotransformed from hemicellulose are being built, this project proposes to clarify some points that can make this process an interesting alternative to the use of these hydrolyzed wastes extracted from bagasse of sugar cane.
