Abstract

Data from the Ministry of Health show that in Brazil a large number of people (35,000 persons / year) lost his life as a result of traffic accidents. This information is obtained through the database (SIH), as mentioned, the largest national information system. Estimates from developed countries suggest that 80% of the total costs associated with vehicle collisions can be attributed to non-fatal events, thus such studies are essential for evidence-based interventions. Between the years 1998 and 2007, municipalities in Paraíba Valley had more than 17 000 hospitalizations due to external causes (ICD-10 V01-V89). The total cost generated by these admissions were over 12 million. For this same period, the State of São Paulo showed a total of more than 300 000 hospitalizations, having spent a total greater than 260 million with admissions due to traffic accidents. Comparing these data still presented with the country, there is a total hospitalization of more than one million, with total expenses greater than 915 million dollars. The magnitude of the expressive values of hospitalization costs and results either in a small region such as in a state or country, show the great impact generated for the System of Health Therefore, it has very important studies that analyze this information with order to generate data for planning, engineering, and also to contribute to programs to prevent traffic accidents.
