Occupational exposures in Dentistry: incidence of injuries among undergraduate students

Abstract

The present study aims to investigate the incidence of occupational exposures to potentially infectious biologic materials, among undergraduate students, during a two year period. A convenience sample will be selected among dental students at Araraquara School of Dentistry - UNESP, and will be included by invitation only the students that perform dental treatment in patients. This descriptive cross-sectional study will be conducted in a universe of 210 students of the 3rd to 5th grades, by each year under study. A questionnaire proposed by Stewardson et al., 2002 will be applied after cross-cultural adaptation. The questionnaire will be applied to dental students at the end of the academic year of 2011 and 2012, aiming to verify the occurrence of occupational exposures and their frequency, the characteristics of the injuries, and the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at the moment of the accident. It is intended to obtain the largest number of volunteers, however it is hoped the involvement of at least 150 volunteers each year of the survey, a total of 300 students at the end. Data will be tabulated and descriptive statistics will be applied. The present research aims to describe the frequency and nature of occupational accidents resulting from occupational exposure to infected biological material, so as to implement teaching strategies, enhancing and facilitating the access and compliance to protocols, and encouraging the reporting of these injuries.
