Abstract

The main objectives of this project is the simulation and optimization of different photonic structures, some of them already produced by the research group at Unicamp. Among the structures to be simulated are the micro- and nano-fibers (tapered fibers), photonic crystal fibers and microstructured polymer fibers. Even more, it is intended to include in the simulations phenomena associated with the experimentation done on these structures. These phenomena are reproduced within the waveguides by external perturbations or by materials included during or after manufacturing, which means that along with the electromagnetic modeling, it is necessary to include, depending on the case, acoustic, mechanical and / or heat effects into the simulations. This project is aligned with the efforts of the research group, among others in Unicamp, on the research and integration of diverse waveguides including conventional fibers, silicon based structures, photonic crystal fibers or microstructured polymer fibers, planar waveguides and photonic crystals. This project will not only bring an expert in the field of computational photonics, but also the tools, and the knowledge needed to control this tools for a highly realistic simulation. It is worth to note that the candidate has previous experience working with this research group in Unicamp through international collaboration done between the group where he has done his PhD and the supervisor of this project. It is also proven his expertise in some of the software packages mentioned in this project, and a good background in physics for analyzing and interpreting the results.
