Abstract

Sepsis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, but little is known about its epidemiology in children, mainly in Brazil and Latin America. The aim of this study is to evaluate the epidemiology of sepsis in children 0-18 years of age, identify the main risk factors, etiologic factors and outcome according to the categories of severity (sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock) and check adherence to treatment guidelines recommended by the American College of Critical Care Medicine. This is a prospective observational study of children with sepsis admitted to the Pediatric Emergency Room of the Emergency Unit and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)- Hospital of the Medical School of Ribeirão Preto, University of São Paulo, period from May 2011 to January 2012. Analysis will be performed from patient charts to obtain demographic data, admission data, such as diagnosis, comorbidities, severity score PRISM (Pediatric Risk of Mortality), presence of organ dysfunction assessed by the score PELOD (Paediatric Logistic Organ Dysfunction) and diagnostic as well as treatment data such as amount of fluid administered during the first hour, time interval to the administration of antibiotics and vasoactive drugs. Patients will be followed until the 28th day of hospitalization or until discharge or death for the analysis of the outcome.
