Abstract

Leiomyomas are common tumors in the female population of reproductive age and can cause numerous symptoms. In approximately 40 to 50% of cases the disease may be symptomatic, resulting in significant worsening in the quality of life. Many techniques have been proposed to treat this disease, including uterine artery embolization (UAE). It is a technique already performed and mastered in several countries and numerous Brazilian medical centers. However, it is a therapy that has been studied in order to properly characterize that its indications, contraindications, complications and results. A controversial data in the literature is its use in large volume uteri (greater than 1000cm3), and contraindicated by some authors and shown by others. Few studies have been conducted with the framework to assess the clinical condition of patients with bulky uterus after the procedure of uterine artery embolization, as well as the final regression of the volume of the uterus and fibroids. The present study aims, therefore, assess the clinical conditions of patients with bulky uteri and submitted to the UAE, determining clinical outcome, the uterine volume after the technique, the resolution of symptoms and complications. Will be carried out retrospectively by chart analysis of patients from Hospital São Paulo (EPM service Gynaecology \ UNIFESP). The data obtained will be statistically analyzed and the results compiled in the form of a scientific article for future publication. The results will provide the scientific basis for appropriation of the therapeutic technique of UAE, confirming and solidifying the indications and contraindications of this therapeutic technique.
