Abstract

Due to global warming, several proposals have emerged in order to use other forms of energy in different processes. Within this line, the oxidation of organic compounds with molecular oxygen catalyzed by metal complexes and activated by light is a relatively new and has been extensively studied. This type of reaction leads to obtaining products of wide application in pharmaceuticals, plastics and fragrances. Since using molecular oxygen as oxidant, these processes lead to a small amount of reaction byproducts and waste, inserting itself in the context of green chemistry. The oxidation of alcohols to obtain aldehydes, ketones or carboxylic acids is of great importance in organic synthesis. The photo-oxidation of alcohols using molecular oxygen is a useful and interesting as the cases usually occur at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The oxidation of organic compounds with molecular oxygen catalyzed by metal complexes and activated by light is an environmentally friendly process and has been extensively studied, because it opens the possibility of using solar energy in the activation of these systems. This paper aims to study the oxidation of different alcohols with O2 and H2O2-induced light using catalysts based on iron and osmium in the presence of ketones and quinones as sensitizers. (AU)
