Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the stories in Bliss & Other Stories (1919), by Katherine Mansfield, checking the deconstruction of the concept of gender in narratives and considering the constitution of male and female characters. We approach the relationship between characters of both genders, different points of view and, considering such notes, we observe that the categorization of genres is a result of social developments. As we ponder on the representation of gender in Mansfield's narratives, we are extending the question to social levels, since Literature is the representation of prospects of reality. The representations allow us to identify particular horizons that, in turn, acquire new ideologies when contacting collective horizons. In Literature, this fact happens through the multiplicity of narrative vision and voices, that, considered separately, are discursive categories. We take as theoretical basis the concept of "exotopy" by Mikhail Bakhtin, in order to evaluate the ideological identifications, the construction of character and the analogies between creator and creation, and considerations about gender and the literature written by women.
