Abstract

Chronic inflammation generated by persistent inflammatory stimuli may be related to the development and progression of different tumor types. In the setting of chronic inflammation there is a constant generation and secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, which facilitates the exacerbation of the lesions. The signals generated by different stimuli (danger signals) induce the production of bioactivities IL-1² and IL-18, which are related with acute and chronic inflammation and can lead to a type of cell death called piroptosis. It is known that the production of these cytokines is induced from the activation of an intracellular structure known as inflamassome. Recently, the role of inflammasome, a molecular complex involved in the inflammatory activation of caspases, has been associated with the exacerbation of the inflammatory response. The involvement of inflammasome in the development and progress of squamous cells carcinoma is not established. Thus, this study aims to examine the role of inflammasome, and the consequent production of IL-1² and IL-18 in the establishment and progression of lesions of squamous cells carcinoma chemically induced in mice.
