Abstract

The main condition of the conjunctiva is conjunctivitis. Contrary to what occurs in dogs with conjunctivitis in cats is usually triggered by primary causes (viruses or bacteria). Herpesvirus type I (FHV-1), the calicivirus, Chlamydophila felis and possibly Mycoplasma spp. are the main etiological agents. The mucopurulence constitutes the most common clinical signs usually associated with chemosis, hyperemia, blepharospasm, keratoconjunctivitis sicca and itching. In the case of FHV-1, the use of molecular diagnostic techniques has facilitated the identification of the presence of the virus DNA in different ocular tissues. The PCR-ELISA was shown to be more sensitive in detecting DNA in studies of the expression of P53 tumor suppressor gene in samples of eyelid tumors in dogs. Thus, this project aims to determine the presence of feline herpesvirus-I into fragments of conjunctiva by PCR and PCR-ELISA in a population of 45 cats that live under conditions conducive to the presence of the agent in Araçatuba (SP). Furthermore, to correlate the clinical ocular and systemic clinical stages among possible with the techniques employed. For the evaluation of results will be applied to analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures and Tukey test, considering the minimal level of significance p <0.05 for all parameters. (AU)
