Abstract

This project is aimed at describing the semantic-enunciative operation of defining statements constituted by "é quando" ("is when"). Such statements are structured in the following way: there is a word or phrase - which is defined - and a clause introduced by the conjunction "quando" ("when") - which is considered to be the defining item. These elements are related by the verb "ser" (to be) in the present (é/is). It is intended to provide an explanation for the operation of the definition which is based on the theoretical assumptions of Semantics of the Event and its analysis tools (Guimarães, 2002, 2007, 2009) and which consists in making explicit the semantic-enunciative aspects involved in the production and circulation of such statements. By means of the concept of "enunciation space" we intend to discuss the political division that determines the emergence or no emergence of this type of definition in different enunciative scenes, considering defining statements with "é quando" from distinct internet pages as units of analysis and taking into account the text in which they belong. For the general description of the operation of this type of definition, we will take into account its semantic-grammatical aspects, evoking and discussing existing grammatical descriptions of the structure [X é Y] - [X is Y].
