Abstract

In the active phase of visceral leishmaniasis (VL)changes occur in lipoprotein metabolism with reduced levels of HDL and increased triglycerides. From these data, this project will focus on these changes in the progression of infection and identify some elements such as its possible triggers. Because these changes may result from reduced activity and expression of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) receptor alpha and peroxisome proliferator-activated (PPAR±), its expression will be evaluated during the progression of VL in hamsters. Moreover, as there is data in the literature suggesting the importance of lipids to the development of amastigotes in the vertebrate host and it is possible that changes in lipoprotein levels contribute to the progression of infection, this study will evaluate the effect of lipid-lowering drug ciprofibrate in control of parasitism on VL in hamsters given that ciprofibrate act by enhancing the expression of PPAR± and the production and activity of LPL.
