Abstract

This project has as main objective the development of nanostructured mineral graphite and "charcoal" by the chemical vapor deposition technique (CVD), aiming their use as electrodes for lithium ion batteries and capacitors. Nanostructuring is the formation of carbon nanostructures (carbon nanotubes with or without nitrogen) on the basal plane of graphite with different grain sizes and morphologies. The samples will be characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and adsorption isotherms. For the electrochemical investigation electrodes with binder will be prepared and will subsequently be submitted to cycles of charge/discharge and cyclic voltammetry to identify relevant parameters for use in electrochemical devices of interest.
