Abstract

Our study aims to undertake a comparative study on the construction of identity frank and Visigoth from the analysis of sources of different natures, namely: history, council minutes and leges. We seek to observe if there was a hegemonic project of the aristocracies of different ethnic origins - German and Roman - in different texts written between the sixth and seventh centuries, or if the construction of identity in this period focused merely on the Germans. Thus, we aim to examine how identities were operationalized in their efforts to write the history of the gens Francorum and gens Gothorum, by regulating episcopal elites and regular legal residents under the authority of the Frankish kings and Visigoths.We understand that this process through a holistic approach to studying the sources is of fundamental importance for understanding the construction of the Frankish Kingdom and the Visigoth Kingdom. Nevertheless, the comparative study will allow us to envision and discuss how was the emergence of two of the most enduring kingdoms founded after the collapse of the hegemony of imperial Roman authority in Western Europe.
