Abstract

Poor immigrants, using the knowledge they brought along with them to Brazil, found in the industrial cluster of Franca/SP (1900-1960) the ideal conditions to settle small craft workshops and socially ascend to the status of industrial entrepreneurs. This research project proposes to deepen the analysis of this process of social mobility, as well as a dialogue with the academic literature responsible for creating the stereotype of the wealthy business industrialist, predominantly in the city of São Paulo, and the poor immigrant who, despite his efforts, remained socially and economically stagnant in Brazil. Our study seeks to expand analysis made for private sectors of the industrial business in Franca (these tests indicate the social mobility of poor immigrants) and to study the industrial cluster as a whole.
