Abstract

Equine species has reduced fertility rates when compared with other domestic species. Part of these observations relates to the fact that the animals are not selected for fertility. In addition, there are tendencies to attribute infertility problems to the female, which hinders a more detailed assessment involving the male. Among the factors that can alter the reproductive indices, sperm quality takes a considerable effect. It has been shown that some components of seminal plasma are related to the fertility of bovine semen, suggesting that the determination of these components could be considered a form of evaluation of the ejaculate. Thus, the first experiment aims to compare sperm parameters of ejaculated sperm from fertile and subfertile stallions through computerized analysis of motility and flow cytometry. The second experiment aims to verify and quantify the presence of osteopontin and semenogelin proteins in sperm of fertile and subfertile stallions. And Experiment III aims to evaluate the two-dimensional profile of proteins present in seminal plasma of fertile and subfertile stallions. Isolation and characterization of proteins present in seminal plasma may permit evaluation of its effect on sperm cells and the identification of safe and early fertile stallions than in those subfertile. Therefore, studies should be conducted in order to identify such proteins and enable the development of new techniques that help to increase and predict the fertility of stallions. (AU)
