Abstract

Through empirical research and theoretical analysis that goes beyond the urban studies, mainly urban planning, geography, economy and sociology, we will try to appoint a relation between aspects of the Brazilian social organization and the social space's configuration, in particular in the city of São Paulo. We will concentrate our attention in the land use transformationsfor the purpose to comprehend the physical obsolescence and urban renewal processes, specially where those processes occur with more intensity, in the core of urban agglomeration. For that, we will try to clarify the conditions behind the dispute for localizations, the acting of the different agents in the production of the physical degradation and the peculiar performance of the Brazilian Government on regulating the conflicts that appears on the urban space usage.
