Abstract

This protocol aims to evaluate the undergraduate students performance concerning different methods for learning caries detection using ICDAS (International CAries Detection and Assessment System)during an activity in a graduation course at Dental School. In this specific activity, we used conventional resources for teaching as theorethical and laboratorial classes and teledentistry. 80 undergraduate students, enrolled in the activity, in 2009, participated in 3 training activities for using ICDAS.as em diferentes dias. Activities - 1: presencial theoretical class; 2: laboratorial class; 3 Teledentistry : specific activities present in a teaching plataform - Moodle. All students asnwered some questionaries previous and after the activities 2 and 3. One questionaire were related to the students perception of the activity and other concerned the content learned by the students. Both questionaires aimed to evaluate the systemathic of ICDAS learning. Based on these data, the reproducibity of exams made by the students will be calculated after each method applied for teaching. The students perception concerning the activities will also be evaluated and also will be verified its association with students performance in the activity. Data from Moodle will be compared to the other learning sessions. Finally, the extracted teeth (from laboratorial setting)will be sectioned an examined histologically. The interexaminer reproducibility will be calculated for all moments. The method validity (sensitivity, specificty and accuracy) will be assessed in same occasions, previous and after laboratorial training). The association of these parameters, students perception and knowledge retention will be tested in all moments as well.
