Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia is an important risk factor to cardiovascular disease, and low HDL-c is strongly associated with the development of atherosclerotic disease. Although the current guidelines suggest values above 40mg/dL for men and 50mg/dL for women, there is no evidence which would be the HDL-c to be reached nor the best way to achieve these levels. It is unclear whether the presence of markedly elevated HDL-c plasma level (HALP - hyperalphalipoproteinemia) represents an atherogenic or atheroprotective condition, since these HDL particles may be dysfunctional. The aim of this study is to compare the prevalence of subclinical coronary atherosclerosis, evaluated by coronary computed tomography (calcium score) among patients with HDL-c >90mg/dL (HALP group) and those with normal levels of HDL-c (40 - 50mg/dL for men; 50 - 60mg/dL for women - control group). In addtion the functionability of these HDL particles will be tested regarding their cholesterol efflux capacity and their anti-oxidative properties.
