Abstract

This Research Project is devoted to the investigation of the impact of microenvironments on the cultural heritage degradation, aiming at the understanding of degradation mechanisms and the monitoring of the aggressiveness factor actions. The investigations will encompass ecclesiastic objects in current use in XVIII and XIX century churches, constructed in urban environments of intense and low industrial activities and coastal areas. The targeted objects will be metals (Ag, Sn, Pb and Cu) or alloys (bronze) and the factors to be monitored will be both physical, such as relative humidity, temperature and illumination (type and intensity), and chemical, such as volatile organic compounds, H2S, SO2 and O3. Internal and external environments will be continually monitored in-situ by portable devices and coupons and periodically by passive samplers.Degradation mechanisms and synergic effects will be evaluated in laboratory bench experiments, following the same protocol used in previous works, with controlled environment parameters. Chemical changes of the metal and alloys surfaces will be studied using spectroscopic (Raman, FTIR, UV-Vis-NIR absorption, XRF) and chromatographic (ions chromatograph and HPLC) methods, as well as XRD and SEM. From the obtained results, it is intended to understand the synergic effects on cultural heritage degradation and to contribute to the establishment of preventive conservation strategies. (AU)
