Abstract

Tissue engineering and biotechnology are developing new techniques and new biomaterials for tissue regeneration and repair. Some biomaterials derived from collagen matrices are widely used in the medical material industry by reason of the collagen is the main structural protein of tissues. To be employed in a secure manner in the human body, a biomaterial should not be cytotoxic, genotoxic and does not cause further damage to the body as the appearance of tumors. Thus, this study aims to investigate the cytotoxic and genotoxic potential of collagen matrices derived from porcine pericardium (Sus domesticus) prepared by alkaline hydrolysis at different times. The matrices of collagen derived from porcine pericardium were prepared and provided by the Institute of Chemistry of São Carlos, University of São Paulo, USP. The matrices underwent an alkaline hydrolysis process at different times (8, 12 and 24 hours) and, along with native porcine pericardium version will be tested by alkaline comet assay and cytotoxicity assays, as XTT and clonogenic survival. By the results of these tests will be possible to predict the future security in use of collagen membranes derived from porcine pericardium in humans, as in the medical materials and pharmaceutical industries.
