Abstract

Thirty-eight years after discovering the SERS effect, this technique has been used in different fields such as bioscience and nanoscience. Nonetheless several fundamental issues about the enhancement mechanisms still need to be fully understood. In order to obtain further comprehension on the nature of the enhancement we will investigate the SERS behavior of molecular wires such as oligophenyleneimine (OPI) and dithiolates adsorbed on Au substrates. We will determine the role of size and nature of the oligophenyleneimine and dithiolates molecular units on the SERS enhancement by means of the enhancement factor (EF) determination. The effect of morphology and organization of Au substrate on the resulting SERS EF) will be determined. Deep insight on the enhancement intensity generated by the "hot spots", structures like Au(substrate)|molecular-wire|Au-nanoparticles will be synthesized and the SERS EF will be measured. The results will provide a better understanding of the factors that govern the enhancement of the Raman signal of the molecular wire at the metal surface as well as a better characterization of the molecular wires studied.
