Abstract

In the world stage, the environmental condition has been a big public policy issue. The complete understanding of the environmental condition parameters is a necessary element to estimate the life quality of the population, even if the ecosystems have a high level of complexity. Therefore, the definition of the public policies has required the use of evaluation tools that put together and quantify information in an explicit way. In this context, the appropriation of indicators and indices has been an important tool to expand information, as it has translated the complexity of the cities' environmental conditions in easily comprehended terms, normally expressed in only one number. In this manner, this project proposes the study and the improvement of Fuzzy Environmental Quality Indices that has been used in Sorocaba city as a management tool. The methodology is based in systems with fuzzy controllers, which incorporate, in a natural way, linguistics variables to the system, making the evaluation easier. The indice consider data of five different environmental dimensions, which are: water resources, pollution, urban solid residues, preservation of the vegetation and environmental education projects, willing to provide an integrated environmental evaluation of the city.
