Abstract

The purpose of this project is to establish the chemostratigraphy of basaltic piles from the northern region of Paraná Magmatic Province, in the northern portion of the state of São Paulo, using samples of two boreholes of Guaira and Buritana assigned by DAEE-Regional Office of Araraquara. Since these samples are in their original stratigraphic sequence, their chemical compositions allow important information about the temporal chemical differentiation of the volcanic process. According to Bellieni et al. (1984) these volcanic rocks are high-Ti-tholeiitic basalts (TiO2> 2%), corresponding to Paranapanema and Pitanga magmas-type (Peate et al. 1992). However, more recent data obtained by Machado (2005) and Rocha Jr. (2006), indicate the possible presence of Urubici basalt-type in the region, which suggests a more complexity of the mantle source involved in the genesis of these rocks. Therefore, the study proposed here will provide geological, petrographic, and geochemical aspects of these basalts that will contribute to a better understanding of the origin and evolution of igneous activity in the Parana Magmatic Province.(AU)
