Abstract During the Renaissance (nearly between XIV-XVII centuries), some scholars have bothered to study and understand the classification of disciplines, their specificities and differences. Mathematicians of that period such as Alessandro Piccolomini (1508-1579), Christoph Clavius (1538-1612) and Adriaan van Roomen (1561-1615) have studied the theme, both to classify those they called "mathematical disciplines" and to establish relationships with other areas of science. In this project, we will analyze the book Universae Mathesis Idea and the liber primus of the work Mathesis Polemica, in which is the description of eighteen disciplines calls "mathematical" by van Roomen, seeking contributions to studies of van Roomen and also trying to understand the philosophical and epistemological status of mathematics at the time. His description includes among other things the object of study, the principles, the locus and utility of each discipline. In addition, we relate this analysis to two important issues related to mathematics of the period: the creation of an attempt to Mathesis Universalis and studies on the mathematical instrumentation.
