Abstract

The aim of this work is to make a critical study about the novel Los Detectives Salvajes, published in 1998 by the Chilean novelist Roberto Bolaño (1953-2003). The focus of this research is fragmentation and multiplicity, narrative techniques that the author uses in a correlative way. This study aims to elucidate the interdependence of these categories and techniques and to compare their use in the novel with the fragment, hybrid genre between philosophy and poetry, theorized by Friedrich Schlegel. The research should also involve reflections about the symbolic elements and the mystery inserted in the plot and their relationship with an "empty transcendence", a concept used by Hugo Friedrich to describe the symbolic elements in the poetic work of Baudelaire and Rimbaud, where the "unknown" creates a tension with no determinate meaning.
