Abstract

The use of feed restriction programs is necessary to correct problems related to excess weight in broiler breeders, however, little research has been conducted comparing the effect of different means of feeding on animals' adiposity and its implications on their reproductive traits. Thus, this project aims at evaluating the effects that different types of feed restriction program have on performance of broiler breeder hens, fat deposition in different organs and its consequent influence on the reproductive efficiency of birds. Two experiments will be performed. In the first experiment, 1500 broiler breeder hens Cobb 500 ® (slow feathering) and 225 cockerels, 1 day old, will be reared separately until 28 days old. Then 1080 females will be distributed in 40 pens, separated from the males (males will be placed in contact with females only when they complete 22 weeks of age so as to have two males per pen), yielding experimental units containing 27 birds each. The design utilized will be a randomized block with five treatments, eight replicates and two blocks (sides north and south of the shed) and the treatments: T1 - control (ad libtum), T2 (daily restriction), T3 (skip-a-day ), T4 (4-3) and T5 (5-2). The females will be submitted to the treatments until they reach 18 weeks old, after which all animals will be fed under the daily restricted feeding program. It will be utilized the split plot experimental design with a total of seven plots (4th, 11th, 18th, 25th, 32nd, 39th and 46th weeks of age), these parcels represent the periods in which a bird will be taken off from each pen in order to analize the body weight and adbdomen, liver and oviduct fat contents. It will be also determined the flock's coefficient of variation at the time of individual weighing wich will occur at the end of each experimental period. The data will be subjected to analysis by the software SAS 9.0.The second experiment will assess the reproductive traits (hatching rate, hatchability, fertility and chick weight at birth) of broiler breeder hens on 25th, 32th, 39th and 46th week of age comparing the different treatments. An average of 160 eggs per treatment will be collected during 2 days, weighed and incubated, totaling 1600 eggs. The arrangement of the treatments will follow the split plot design, being each plot the week corresponding to egg collection. The experimental design will be a randomized block with five treatments, eight replicates and 2 blocks (age of the eggs). The data will be subjected to analysis by SAS 9.0 software. It is hoped, through this research, determine what program, or programs, of feed restriction should be advised about the benefits they can bring to the broiler breeder producers and consequently to the whole chain of broiler production.
