Abstract

Wild animals bred in captivity, are commonly affected by failures in management and inadequate diets that can lead to changes and diseases, primarily those osteometabolic. The skeletal system is influenced by several factors such as age, diet, exercise, diet and hormones, including sex hormones. The Callitrichids reproduce easily, which can become a problem in management centers, in addition, the reproduction of these animals in captivity is prohibited by IBAMA, which requires appropriate and effective contraceptive methods. Orchiectomy is an effective and permanent method of contraception, however leads to hormonal changes. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effects of orchiectomy in the skeletal system Callitrichids in captivity, through monthly evaluations by radiographic optical densitometry and quantitative bone ultrasound during the six months after castration.(AU)
