Abstract

The main purpose of this project is to obtain relatively tough glass-ceramics (KIc>2.0 MPa.M1/2) of the MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 system, with small crystal size (1-10 microns) and crystallized fraction up to 70% (most oxide glasses exhibit KIC< 0.7, and traditional glass-ceramics exhibit KIC in the range 1.0 - 1.5 MPa.m1/2). Different glass compositions of the MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 system will be designed with ZrO2 and/or TiO2 as nucleating agents. We intend to contribute for the development of high strength and high toughness glass-ceramics.
